Baanam: Curtain Raiser

This is my first film as a director.  In this film I tried to recreate, once again, the spirit of Howard Roark on screen. People who watch this movie should say how far I have been successful. But the story of this film is not at all related to any of the tributes which will be obviously noticed in the movie. One of them is the legendary 'cycle chain' shot from Shiva(1989).
Since the primary objective of this teaser is to gain attention about this film, i chose to show that shot which i felt was more decent & exciting than a woman's cleavage, an adult joke, or brutal violence on the screen.  This is first visual look of the film to everyone who is not associated with it.
I am very clear that a particular film cannot satisfy everyone in the world. It will appeal to those who like it. 'Baanam' is an action film without any violence.
And it is definitely a different film from the house of Vyjayanthi.
'we all steal, but if we are smart we steal from great directors. Then, we can call it influence' Krzysztof Kieslowski.

  9. I liked the trailer... I'll definitely watch your movie to see how the spirit of Roark is recreated because as far as my knowledge goes the most difficult part in creating the spirit of the Best Man is making the character to appear believable. I wish to see that happen in your story!

    All the best

  12. bhayya today i have seen the movie

basically the narration of the film is too slow but interval scene was excellent raised a lot of hopes on second half

but should have concentrated in increasing the tempo of the film which was too flat

but visuals were too good and fresh all the best for your future projects

  23. HI chaitanya garu,
I liked the film. Basically the content of the film is excellent.

I felt that if villan could resist a bit more at the end rather than hero killing him right away would add to the movie.

  25. Hi Chaitanya, Liked the film very much. Great camera work by the way whole through out the movie. Felt very refreshed after seeing a movie that has not surrendered to all mass masala stuff and just gone through as per the script demanded..

My congrats to all the team of Banam.

Just one question, why did you put the cycle chain scene? Is it because the film based in 1989 and Shiva was also released in the same year?

  26. A great movie .... mature, sensible, inspiring and taught provoking. Nice camera work, great music, best locals and a simple story all that is needed for a good movie.

All the characters suited very well and a good movie to watch with the whole family.

Hope we get more of these in future.

Congrats to the whole team of Baanam.

  27. hey Chaitanya!! i should not kill your spirit..good effort in trying a different concept but you failed in its execution..I just wanted to ask you if you yourself have understood the concept..Don't get offended..be genuine to yourself..The very first thing i got disappointed looking at the trailer ..Nara rohit saying naa peru paanigrahi...He don't know how to pronounce his name..There is a difference in Telugu b'n ni /ini...I am not convinced he is so intellectual despite he has lots of books shown in background because of his pronunciation..forget it...you have used the pictures of chego vera/bhagatsingh in the background which conveys he follows them...Any revolution is to bring change in the mindset of people irrespective of how much support they get from public..Here i didn't see hero bringing any change in the mindset of public...I felt the concept is killed trying to establish a hero..I didn't find the purpose of villain being established in the most stylish way runs like a coward with out defending himself in the climax. You said its a action film with out violence...f*** it!!!violence is not something that can be showed all the time but it can be conveyed..You conveyed to the audience that villain killed his own dad!!whatever...At least if the villain has to run the psychological fear that hero tries to create in the mind of villain is also not been properly established...in the very beginning i was happy to see your effort to run the movie in a natural way but give me four people and i will change the whole system is like a fairy tale dream..all the commercial movies which shows hero fighting against corruption aren't realistic..They are just thoughts which are bullshit and we know system cant be changed so easily as the way hero's do..You should have tried to show the change in more realistic way how hero puts an end that are bound to the realistic circumstances..You should have tried something that's possible with in the system..You should have thought different in killing hero's father..i am not convinced that a naxel doesn't know difference between a real and dummy gun...If you did a proper research you will know naxels wont go without proper Rikki and proper trails...forget about loops ..There are few points which are good..hero pointing police as well naxel have their own flaws...The point where hero says police are not corrupted during training ...The inner story line of your film is good but the screenplay is incomplete trying to justify all the angles forgetting the main idea in the concept..Over all its a film made with half knowledge about society ..you know whats real and what is not real ..When you dared to touch such point and script you yourself know you are aware of everything but you didn't spend enough time in doing research ...you definitely deserve more but you are lazy in understanding the screenplay..when you have the capacity to score 100 score 100 you just tried for 35 and that's what i feel pity about you...I have put so much effort to write you this message spending lots of time ...What will i get if i criticize you ..nothing..If you see the positive angle you will make a film with 100 % effort..I dont want you score 35 when you can score 100..
    Cheers,

  28. Hi Chaitanya,

I watched the movie in BIGCINEMAS ....I guess dat was the first show screened in andhrapradesh at 10am..

Am very curious to watch the movie after seeing the trailors and listening music scores.....

I cannot deny the efforts u people kept behind the screen b'coz its really a visual feast for those who luv nature....Cinematography is at its best..

And coming to music i cant say it extraordinary.....but luv dat ....these days am really missing My all time Fav.Music director "MAESTRO" ...After a long long time Banam audio recalls Ilayaraja style...

Personally i feel U have a bright future ....some scenes in the movie are not so convincing .....but the way you handled the movie coordinating with all the departments is really sensible....

i cant say overall movie is Outstanding but i can proudly say dat Tollywood got a sensible director and am really happy for dat....

keep rocking and never go out of ur track like unusual and dont add so called commercial elements(please dont get in to dat trap)

be urself u'll definitely reach the position u dreamed .....

    all the best

  29. exciting than showing a woman's cleavage, or an adult joke, and brutal violence on the screen... You are not great but definitely different..

  30. I am waiting for a post after the release... I think you wanted the climax in a different way... If you write a complete piece on that ....

  31. hi Chaitanya..... just wanted to leave a few comments on BANAM...... it is a great run.... i am watching it for 5 th time now...... i am a big fan of mass masala movies.... but banam is a real cool movie..... i cant take my eyes off it....... scenes like sayaji shinde saying to his son "manchi kalakshepam ra...." after AVS leaves the scene knowing about sayaji and his son's intensions is real cool..... thats how a hollywood movie runs..... very natural...... things like introducing sayaji in the discussion with avs after a couple of scenes with his son makes audience reel back and bit and the previous scenes make more sense..... thats what happens in most of hollywood movies like departed..... noting is understood at the beginning and all ties will be knotted towards the end...... dialogues are very natural and sensible..... great great job...... good luck with next venture

  32. Virinchi I second your opinion.. It's the coolest I've ever seen after Shiva in Telugu movies.. I mean the DIRECTOR ORIENTED.. That trend works very well in Hollywood.. I'm not saying that it won't in Tollywood but our audience have to get out of the state of mind that they are in now.. Chaitanya made a mark already.. I'm sure another 4-5 films like this, our audience will start finding Great Excitement in these kind of films rather than the films with navel and cleavage exposures, cheap comedys, star oriented movies etc..etc.. Then it will be really tough for the current so called TOP STARS to sustain in the market.. With an ALL PACKED screen play and DECENT DIRECTION skills we don't need a STAR as HERO for such kind of movies.. Well.. Truth be told.. If that happens in the future.. We can say that Chaitanya is THE LANDMARK and THE BEGINNER because it was long lost since the times of SIVA..
